OHSAA Boys State Tournament Day 2:Who Is Into The Finals?
Logan Elm blows 10 point lead, loses in OT- Logan Elm held off Dayton Thurgood Marshall, just not long enough. Elm lead by as many as 17 at one point, only to fall in overtime by 9 points. Thurgood Marshall (22-4) hit a three to tie the game at 48 with 5.8 seconds left, and never looked back in the extra frame. The game was tied at 24 at half, and Logan opened the third quarter with a run to open a 10 point lead. Free throw shooting plagued Logan, setting up the final possession for Marshall in regulation, who had two shots to tie it, hitting the second time.
Desales gets outrun by St. Vincent St. Mary- If the LeBron years taught you anything, it’s that Akron St. V (21-4) comes ready to play when they get to the Schott. Today was no different, and the Irish rolled over DeSales (20-4) 75-61. St V. has had recent success in the tournament, winning three crowns in four years at one point. They used an 11-0 second quarter run to gain a 39-20 halftime lead. The lead shrunk to 6 at one point, but St V. answered every call and added to a 7 point lead to pull away late.
Northland rolls over Harding, first championship appearance- J.D. Witherspoon’s 25 points combined with Jared Sullinger’s 22 points helped Northland (26-1) defeat Warren Harding (23-3) 73-59.The Vikings outrebounded Harding 39-19, and Raider coach Steve Arnold spoke about that fact after the game, “We knew we needed to keep them off the glass but we just didn’t do a good job of it.” Northland advanced to their first state final appearance in their history.
Cincinnati Princeton punches ticket to play #1 Vikings- Cincinnati Princeton(24-1) had a 21-9 fourth quarter to push away from Toledo St. Johns (20-5) 55-41. Princeton used a 17-3 run that spanned 4:54 seconds in the third and fourth quarters. Once the lead got to 10 in the fourth, the game never got close again. Northland is the next opponent for Princeton, playing for the Division I state crown at 8:30 tomorrow night.
