No Place Like Home For Slumping Reds
Losing six straight is never fun, at all. But losing those six games by a combined 43-20 is just adding salt to the wound. Oh, did I forget to mention the face that two players were placed on the DL? (Micah Owings, and Chris Dickerson) However, with all that, the Reds jumped on the Padres in the first inning, and carried the early 3 run lead into a 6-4 victory at the expense of the crumbling San Diego Padres (38-62). Homer Bailey (2-2, 6.87) pitched another solid game for the Reds (45-53), who are coming off a road trip in LA and Chicago in which they didn’t take a single game, going 0-6.”Ya know, that’s a start, Homer threw a good game,” Dusty said after the game.
In the first inning, the Reds got two on due to Taveras reaching on an error by Cabrera, and an Alex Gonzalez infield hit. Next to the plate was Votto, who was rung up by third base umpire Jerry Crawford, in which the ump said he went around (he clearly did not). Votto went crazy on Crawford, yelling down to third, mostly consisting of a word rhyming with “firetruck”. Votto was ejected shortly after, resulting in his second tossing of the month, the first being against the Mets on the 12th. Following Votto was Phillips, who took Josh Geer (1-7, 5.96) deep on the second pitch of the AB, giving the Reds a 3-0 lead. “Brandon hit a big one, that was a big one, a 3 runner in the first inning,” Manager Dusty Baker said about Phillips’ 15th HR of the year.
The Reds and Padres traded homers for the most part after that, with Bailey giving up solo shots to Cabrera(1) and Gonzalez(26) in the 6th. Jonny Gomes added 2 home runs for the Redlegs, getting him to double digits on the year, at 10. Edwin Encarnacion(5) added another in the 4th inning. Coco Cordero gave up only his 2nd homer in 39.1 innings of work, Kouzmanoff getting his 14th round-tripper of the year.
