Thad Matta has done it again, hooking on Northland’s J.D. Weatherspoon, to the class of 2010. This comes after Weatherspoon had retracted going to Xavier, as originally planned. ESPN Scouts have described him as

“A super athletic combo forward. This lefty appears to fall from the ceiling on some of his highlight reel dunks. He is developing a perimeter game. He is a streaky shooter to 17 feet right now and is limited with his off the dribble game. Weatherspoon is most comfortable on the block. Inside J.D. is able to spin or jump over opponents for easy buckets. He is also proficient using either hand inside. He is a very good rebounder for his size. He is definitely more of an undersized 4 man than a 3 right now. Defensively he is a good shotblocker inside due to his incredible bounce. He does struggle some in space which adds to the argument of his true position being that of a power forward.”

J.D. was a dominant presence, combined with teammate Jared Sullinger, who hung on for dear life in the OHSAA D-I title game, defeating Cincinnati Princeton 60-58. J.D. had 18 points, leading the team, and also collecting 7 rebounds. Northland is going to be a dominant threat again this year, my personal pick to repeat as state champion.
