Rio De Janeiro. The South American city beat out Madrid, Spain by a vote total of 66-34 in the final round of voting today in Copenhagen. The hopes for Chicago were squashed quickly, as the voting went against them, only getting 18 first round votes, putting them behind Tokyo (22), Rio (26), and Madrid (28), eliminating them. “Either it was tactical voting, or a lot of people decided not to vote for Chicago whatever happened,” IOC member Gerhard Heiberg said. “Nobody knows, but everybody is in a state of shock. Nobody believes it. I’m very sorry about it.”

Asia’s chance to get another Summer Olympics faded out when Tokyo’s 20 votes wasn’t enough to get them to the final. When it got to the final voting, the chance to get South America its first Olympics seemed to get closer and closer. The second round voting gave much hope to Brazil, as the voting broke down very much in favor of Rio, having 46 votes to Madrid’s 29. Once the final votes were tallied, the dream had come true for so many that wanted this. “Maybe some of the people tomorrow can rest. I’m not [resting].” said Rio 2016 President Carlos Nuzman.

Chicago was stunned by the disappointing elimination in the first-round, especially after having President Barack Obama show up at the meetings on Friday morning. Some who voted for Chicago were frustrated with other members of the committee. “To have the president of the United States and his wife personally appear, then this should happen in the first round is awful and totally undeserving,” Senior Australian IOC member Kevan Gosper said.
