In the first week of the City League basketball season, East’s Jerry Dixon torched the Mifflin Punchers for 47 points in a loss. Now in the last week of the season, the Punchers were hit with several blows, this time coming from Centennial’s Bucky Chenault, an underrated senior point guard that has led the Stars throughout the past two seasons. In part of a 116-105 double overtime win, Chenault obliterated Mifflin, a team that has lacked to play any defense whatsoever this season, making 17 shots from the field, 5 from deep and sinking 11 free throws. Jumping out to a 52-45 lead at half, the Stars failed to secure the lead in the second half. Being outscored 40-37 in the second session, the shootout continued to overtime. As the game had suggested, the five minute overtime was full of scoring as both teams scored 15 and went into another overtime. This was the Stars time, limiting the fast paced Punchers to five points while scoring 16. For Chenault, Monday night’s performance isn’t an odd commodity. The undersized guard has lit teams up all season, gaining consideration for City League player of the year. Centennial at 8-12, has shown the ability to beat anyone this season, defeating Brookhaven in the first week of the season along with battling the number one team in the land,  Northland to a ten point victory. Behind Chenault, the Centennial backcourt is one of the best in the City League North.

OTHER CITY LEAGUE HEADLINES:

  • Bitter rivals Brookhaven and Beechcroft battled all night, as the Bearcats came out victorious 63-61 in overtime behind Peter Kpan, who scored 19.
  • Northland destroyed the hopeless Linden-McKinley Panthers 106-26, in part to Jared Sullinger and Trey Burke who combined to score 47 points.
  • Winless West continued the trend last night, dropping another game, this time at the hands of South leading Marion Franklin, 90-55.
  • East wins yet again behind the dynamic backcourt duo of Jerry Dixon and Jordan Laster, combining for 36 points in a 67-50 win over Whetstone.
